Prebendaries of old were clergy entitled to the income from particular pieces of land.
However in the modern Church of England, it simply denotes clergy of particular esteem, accomplishment or long service, honoured with a title and a special seat - a stall - in the central part of the cathedral.
Prebendaries hold the title up to the age of 70 after which they are usually given the title Prebendary Emerita/Emeritus
