In response to the recent heatwaves sweeping across the UK, St Matthew’s Church in Walsall hosted a unique outdoor baptism today (Sunday 2nd August) that combined water conservation with local football pride.
Originally planned as a full-immersion baptism using a large pool, church leaders made a last-minute pivot to a "baptism by bucket" to practice responsible water usage during the ongoing hot weather.
During the 10:45am service, the entire congregation stepped outside the church’s historic west doors—overlooking Walsall town—to witness local candidate Carl Perry take the plunge.
The baptism was officiated by the Rector of St Matthew’s, Rev. Jim Trood, who stood elevated on a step-ladder to douse Carl using three black buckets specifically labelled 'Father', 'Son', and 'Holy Spirit'.
Adding another striking local connection, Carl was baptized while wearing Walsall FC’s new official shirt. The football shirt’s design holds special significance as it is directly inspired by the intricate architectural ceiling inside St Matthew’s Church itself—creating a full-circle moment where faith, local heritage, and football merged.
Rev. Jim Trood, Rector of St Matthew’s, said:
"With the recent heatwaves we've been experiencing, filling a large immersion tank simply didn't feel responsible regarding our water consumption. By switching to three buckets, we were able to preserve the deep spiritual significance and joy of the baptism while being sensible stewards of our resources.
"Having Carl baptized in the new Saddlers kit—which actually features the pattern of our very own church ceiling—made it an extra special and truly memorable occasion for our whole church family."
The congregation applauded and cheered as water rained down over Carl, bringing a joyous (and cooling) celebration to the town hilltop.
